In Asia, BlueScope Steel continues to support our local neighbourhoods through a range of community programs. We seek opportunities to work with our local communities in the countries in which we operate, to make an important contribution to their cultural and social welfare, and to make a positive impact on the lives of the people in those communities.
Many of our major community contributions in Asia have been tied to the products and services we offer. This was particularly true in Indonesia and Thailand, where we donated steel building products and expertise to the tsunami relief effort.
As with previous natural disasters experienced in the region, temporary and low cost housing has again been provided for people in need.
When the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit South Asia in December 2004, BlueScope Steel Thailand made a significant donation of steel building products and built 16 houses for families whose homes were destroyed.
BlueScope Steel employees in Indonesia actively participated in the tsunami relief effort for Banda Aceh and Nias, contributing money, clothing, food, toiletries and baby care products. The Company also donated building materials for the construction of community facilities to benefit those affected by the disaster.
Our major plant in Thailand is located in an area near a number of struggling orphanages and under-privileged primary schools, and we continue to provide support in the form of advice, materials and scholarships.
In Malaysia, we have donated roofing materials for a school in Sabah.
In China, we support a range of community projects focussing on children, environment, health and safety programs and the donation of products for local community projects.
